Elizabeth Zaruda - Nazarene Discipleship International President
Our KidzMin program is led by a lifelong educator who serves as our Nazarene Discipleship International president. Elizabeth is a highly dedicated professional who has a passion to see children grow in their knowledge of and relationship with Jesus Christ. She is committed to developing engaging, developmentally appropriate experiences so that children will love coming to church, learning about God, and relating to the teachers and one another.
We would love to help answer some of your questions!
We must treasure our children as our greatest gifts and the future of the Church by valuing them, loving them, and grounding them in awareness of and relationship with the living God.
It means much to celebrate God's generosity! To be able to impart even a little of what I have received– forgiveness, compassion, nearly unbelievable faithfulness, fun, the fruit of trust and obedience, even playfulness! What benefit is it to feel so rich if I keep God's kindness to myself and don't share its abundance, especially with children who have so much going against them as they grow up in the world!
My hope is to continue grounding the children is knowing more of who God and Jesus are, to know who we ourselves are, to introduce the Holy Spirit aspect of the trinity and what the church is, for them to experience God’s presence in and answers to their prayers, and to continue to have fun crafts and play time. I hope to see more families with 3 – 11-year-olds and to train more teachers.
Glad you asked how to be involved! Do you like crafts? Want to learn to teach a lesson using simple manipulable items, a felt board, or a great YouTube movie? Maybe you have a drama bent -- how about role play, with simple props or costumes? Can you sing or play an instrument and have a desire to teach a song? Or maybe you’re visual and could work with a team making bulletin boards on a Saturday, with pizza provided? Classroom helpers can work once a month or more, and teachers work two Sundays a month. You can do it! And a bonus – at some point this year we will have a few Saturday teacher trainings to learn how kids’ minds and bodies can best be involved in learning!
If you are visiting for the first time, rest easy. Our children's workers will introduce themselves to you as you come into the foyer, and explain a little about who they are and how the process works to get children into their KidzMin class.
Our friendly children's workers will immediately make you feel at home. Families stay together for the service opening and our worship in music, and then are dismissed for children's church, when they are escorted to class by the instructors.
Parents pick their children up from KidzMin at the end of the service. Your children will thrive in the care of our dedicated, vetted, and trained children's workers.
All of our children's leaders and helps have been background checked before they are allowed to volunteer in any capacity in children's ministry. Our lower-level doors all remain locked during the service for the safety of the children.
There are designated bathrooms downstairs that are primarily for the children's use during the children's church hour.
The children's safety and security is a priority.
In our children's ministry, we believe in far more than just babysitting the children so their parents can go to church. We believe they are able to learn the truths of the Bible in developmentally appropriate ways, and so we are committed to providing instruction that is meaningful, rich, and engaging.
We also know that children need to move, they need to be holistically engaged--so, all parts of them should be employed in the learning process. Typical lessons will have a theme and a story. There will be object lessons and crafts or activities. Children we be encouraged to think and discuss about the lesson of the day through activating their curiosity through discovery questions.
Our goal would be to have the children leave joyful and having been taught something meaningful from God's Word, with an invitation to apply it appropriately in their lives.
