We would love to have you come worship with us! We are smallish (50–60 on any given Sunday), but not weird (well, not more than your typical “Portland weird…”). You will feel welcomed, but not smothered. We’re a “no fuss, be yourself” kind of people, so we think you’ll feel at home. Still, it's always hard to be the “visitor,” unfamiliar with culture and context. When that’s a church setting, it can be even more awkward! At Sunnyside, our “What to Expect” page gives you information we imagine you might want to know. Click here to get the details, from how we dress to the order of service, to what food and beverage is available. We can’t wait to meet you!
Our KidzMin program is led by a lifelong educator who serves as our Nazarene Discipleship International president. Elizabeth is a highly dedicated professional who has a passion to see children grow in their knowledge of and relationship with Jesus Christ. She is committed to developing engaging, developmentally appropriate experiences so that children will love coming to church, learning about God, and relating to the teachers and one another.
We would love to help answer some of your questions!
There is a upper and lower parking lot in front of the church just off of 92nd Avenue, with plenty of parking. Handicapped spaces line the parking lot adjacent to the sidewalk in front of the front entrance.
We have KidzMin for ages 4 through 12. You can click on the KidzMin link for more information.
Service begins with an opening song that sets the tone for the morning. People join in the song as they find their seats and begin to engage in worship. There is a welcome greeting with announcements from the pulpit, and then a call to worship done by a congregant, who will read a passage of scripture related to the sermon topic. After that, there will be three to four worship songs, then a short greeting time, then the sermon. After the sermon there will be one more worship song, then a formal closing with prayer and dismissal.
To become a member of Sunnyside Nazarene, there are three hours of membership classes required where topics related to governance, ethics, theological positions, and other denominational distinctives are covered. Once the classes have concluded, attendees can indicate a willingness to take membership in the church. Those who desire to become members are formally welcomed into membership during a church service before the congregation.
For leadership of a ministry, we prefer to appoint or elect people who are members or who are seeking membership. If you are interested in membership, please see Pastor Deborah or Pastor Craig.
To be eligible to serve as a board member (on our Ministry Leadership Team), one must be a member in good standing who has demonstrated a faithful commitment to God and to the local body of Sunnyside Church of the Nazarene. Potential board members are nominated and elected each year in March/April at the annual meeting. Board members must be willing to sign and abide by the Code of Conduct as outlined in the Nazarene Manual. Elected members serve three-year terms, and are eligible to be re-elected for additional terms at the end of their three-year service.
The best way to join a ministry is to simply talk to the person who leads that ministry. Each ministry leader can talk to you about any training that might be required, including whether or not you will need to be background checked. They can work with you to determine where your gifts best fit in the ministry. Click on the ministry link to see the leader’s name and contact information.
Small groups at Sunnyside gather on Sundays after the sermon. They are open to everyone at any time. These “Sunday School” small groups run quarterly with a Sunday “off” between quarters where we hold a potluck/community celebration. Click on the “Sunday School/Small Groups” link to see the schedule and the classes currently being offered.
Serving is as easy as just letting someone know you want to help. Aside from working with children (which requires a background check), there are all sorts of ways to serve. Some areas, like worship and technology, require an onboarding with the ministry leader which means there may be a period of learning before you actively deploy into service. In other areas, a conversation with the ministry leader and/or the pastor suffices to be sure that you are a good fit in that particular area as well as helping us get to know you so that we can make your service a positive and fruitful experience for you.
